Create a type of secondary that is used only for remote printing. No steps would be allowed to run on the secondary. Printers could be associated with the secondary. The secondary would not have access to the /aiw file system. Instead print files would be sent from the primary to the secondary over the existing RPD communication channel. This would make setup of a print secondary much simpler as no NFS share would be needed. It would also work well for an RPD primary running in a cloud environment that needs the ability to print.
The secondary would need to support both AFP printing and PDF printing. AFP printing would require the installation of PSF on the server running the remote printing secondary. PDF printing would require the Printer Connector on the remote printing secondary and a way to get the print file to the printer when the printer cannot request it from the primary (no JDF reference to the primary for retrieving the file).
SNMP and other queries to get information from the printer would need to originate from the remote printing secondary.
